
Dr. Melvin C. McDowell Jr. is a clinical social worker, mental health therapist, and college professor specializing in social work education, mental health, and community-based interventions. With a deep commitment to advocacy and healing, Dr. McDowell balances academic leadership with hands-on clinical practice, mentoring future social workers while delivering impactful therapeutic services. Dr. McDowell is also the owner and Clinical Director at McDowell Healing Arts Center here in the city of Saginaw. Dr. McDowell is also an Assistant Professor of Social Work in the Master of Social Work program at Saginaw Valley State University. In clinical practice, Dr. McDowell provides therapy to individuals, families, and communities, specializing in trauma-informed care, particularly in underserved populations. Beyond clinical and academic work, Dr. McDowell is engaged in research and advocacy, with a focus on racial equity and mental health. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Dr. McDowell is also involved in expanding mental health services and collaborating with community leaders to integrate behavioral health into holistic wellness spaces. Dr. McDowell's leadership, research, and clinical expertise continue to shape social work practice, mental health advocacy, and inclusive community care.
